Sensory Visual Disease
Did you know that 50 % of your brain is integrated in processing vision?
The visual pathways in the brain span the entirety of the horizontal axis from the back of the eyes all the way to the back of the brain where the visual cortex recreates the images received by your eyes.
Dr. Subei is an expert at managing visual disturbances, flashes of light, positive visual phenomena, visual hallucinations, and visual disturbances that may be due to abnormal brain activity caused by serious Neurological illnesses such as seizures, brain tumors, Posterior Reversible Encephalopathy Syndrome, Reversible Cerebral Vasoconstriction Syndrome, Encephalitis, Meningitis, Strokes, Visual Snow Syndrome and Ocular Migraines.
Did you know that your optic nerves are not actually nerves?
They are literally portions of your brain that form cylinder-shaped extravasations and extend into the back of the eye, where all the information gathered from the eye is transported back to the brain and processed to recreate your vision as you see it.
This portion of your brain’s “optic nerves” may become diseased by infection, inflammation, stroke, compressed by a mass, vascular abnormality or tumor, pressurized by increased intracranial pressure, or even attacked by your immune system by various autoimmune diseases.
Dr. Subei has dedicated his career to treating such disease entities that may involve your optic nerves such as optic neuritis from Multiple Sclerosis, Neuro-Myelitis Optica, Anti- Myelin Oligodendrocyte Glycoprotein antibodies, Neuroretinitis, as well as ischemic optic neuropathies such as Non-arteritic Ischemic Optic Neuropathy (NAION), and Giant Cell Arteritis (GCA).
Dr. Subei is also an expert in treating patients with increased intracranial pressure such as Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension, and Cerebral Venous Sinus Thrombosis which without treatment can lead to permanent blindness in both eyes.
Motor Visual Disease
Did you know that One Third of your Cranial Nerves are Dedicated to Vision?
3 cranial nerves and a significant portion of the brainstem nuclei, nuclear integrators, inter-nuclear tracts, and balance center (cerebellum) control the perfectly precise eye movements, fixation, accommodation, coordinating, and adapting to changes in the head and body positioning, as well as the constantly moving environment.
Any disease entity that disrupts these delicate neuronal pathways can lead to debilitating symptoms such as double vision (Diplopia), droopy eyelids (Ptosis), unequal pupil size (Anisocoria).
Dr. Subei has extensive experience with treating double vision and finding out if your symptoms are caused by serious systemic Neurological diseases such as autoimmune diseases like Myasthenia Gravis, Multiple Sclerosis, Thyroid eye disease, stroke, traumatic brain injury, cancer, blood vessel dissections, malformations, brain bleeds, infections, meningitis, and other inflammatory neurological illnesses.
Did you know that your brain’s balance center is directly hardwired to your inner ears, brainstem and eyes?
Dr. Subei is an expert in managing patients with spinning sensations (Vertigo), the sensation of trailing and after images (Palinopsia), the sensation of the environment rocking back and forth (Oscillopsia), non-volitional uncontrolled eye movements (Nystagmus), non-volitional eyelid closure (Blepharospasm) and utilizes video nystagmography to detect subtle abnormalities in the visual-balance Neuronal axis and treats patients with diseases such as Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo, Optokinetic Hypersensitivity, Vertiginous Migraine, Vestibular Neuritis, masses involving the balance center.
Frequently Asked Questions
01
How long does it take to get an appointment?
We are providing the soonest Neuro-Ophthalmology appointments in Arizona, within a few days.
02
What to expect on your first visit to The Brain and Eye institute?
The Brain and Eye Institute is the only comprehensive Neuro-Ophthalmology Center in Arizona! To be able to practically provide the best care to the 7.5 million citizens of Arizona, we do things differently. During our initial evaluation appointment, all the details of your case are put together by a professionally trained clinical assistant, including the dates and results of your symptoms, brain and eye imaging, previous evaluations by other physicians, in addition to an in depth evaluation of your visual system. Once this initial evaluation is complete, a subsequent appointment is set to see Dr. Subei for consultation.
03
What type of testing are we going to do?
We will test your Visual Acuity corrected at a distance, Amsler Grid , Color Vision Examination , Peripheral Visual Field testing , Fundus Photography, and Optical Coherence Tomography of your optic nerves.
04
Will I be tested with my current glasses? Should I wear them to my visit?
Yes you will need to bring and wear your glasses to all your appointments.
05
Will my eyes be dilated?
Most of the time, we do not dilate patients' eyes. In some instances, when the pupils are too small to obtain a good view of the back of the eye, we may need to dilate your eyes. This will take place in the initial evaluation with the Doctor’s assistant.
06
I already got the Visual Field test done, why do I have to do it again?
The Changes of the visual field results over time is one of the most important indicators of the Neuro-Ophthalmic disease process. This data is essential to get an accurate diagnosis.
07
How do I access the patient portal?
You can go to our website www.brainandeye.org then go to "Patient Services" page and then click on “Patient Portal Button”.
08
Can I have all my records sent to me?

What is your no show policy?
A minimum of 48 business hours’ notice must be given for any cancellation or rescheduling of any type of appointment at The Brain and Eye Institute. For more information, see our Cancelation/No Show Policy.
10
What information specifically should I bring?
Please bring your last eye exam, Lab work, MRIs of the brain, and CT for the head on a CD to be viewed by our Neuro-Ophthalmologist.
